Video conferencing overview

Video conferencing allows you to hold real-time online meetings with people in different locations. Uses of video conferencing include remote meetings, distance education, group training, thesis presentations, job interviews and guest lecturers. Video conferencing allows you and your participants to save costs and time.

Services

Video conferencing rooms

We have dedicated video conferencing rooms available for UVic faculty, staff, researchers and departments. These rooms are equipped with high-definition cameras, microphones and flat-panel displays. There are also staff on-site to provide technical support.

Zoom

Zoom is a popular video and voice chat platform. It's free for all UVic students and employees.

Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams is a communication and collaboration tool. It provides text chat, voice and video calling, file sharing and collaborative editing, and integration with other Microsoft 365 apps. Departments and labs can set up collaborative workspaces called teams for their work.

Video conferencing tips

  • Only share your meeting details with participants.
  • Use waiting rooms to screen who joins your meeting.
  • Mute audio and video of participants if necessary.
  • Never open links and attachments from unknown senders.
