File sharing & storage
There are a number of services you can use to share, store and back up your work at UVic for both individuals and groups.
Individual file storage
Microsoft OneDrive
Microsoft OneDrive is Microsoft 365's cloud file storage service. You can access your OneDrive from the web and desktop and mobile apps. OneDrive supports file sharing and collaboration, but document libraries in SharePoint and Teams make it even easier to share and collaborate with your team or group members.
Network home folders
Personal home file storage provides network storage space for your personal data. If you use a Windows lab computer, it will use your network home folder to save the files on your desktop and in your documents folder. Some Windows office computers do the same.
Group file sharing
Microsoft Teams and SharePoint
Document libraries in Teams and SharePoint are like OneDrive for groups. They have the same features but are optimized for sharing and collaboration within a department or team.
Network drives
Network drives (also called file shares or departmental file storage) provide departments with shared storage space.
IBM Storage Protect
IBM Storage Protect (formerly Spectrum Protect, Tivoli Storage Manager or TSM) is used to back up servers and specialized systems. Find on the IT Support SharePoint site or contact IT support for help.
Protect sensitive data
UVic employees often work with sensitive (internal, confidential or highly confidential) data. Protecting sensitive data is a shared responsibility.
University Systems is responsible for maintaining infrastructure and providing information security support. Employees are responsible for taking care with sensitive data and using secure storage resources appropriately.
