UVic-BYOD Wi-Fi

Most home electronics like gaming consoles, smart TVs, streaming boxes, and smart home devices don't support secure enterprise wireless networks like UVic. If you live in residence, you can use the UVic-BYOD network to connect them to the Internet.

To protect students' privacy, devices can't see or control each other over the campus network. Some devices or features depend on this kind of connection and won't work. These include AirPlay, Chromecast, and network-attached printers and storage devices.

Supported devices

To connect to UVic-BYOD, your device must support WPA2-PSK security. Most modern home entertainment systems do, including:

  • Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch gaming consoles
  • Roku smart TVs and streaming devices
  • Android smart TVs and streaming devices (including Amazon Fire TV and Fire Sticks)
  • Amazon Echo
  • Apple TV

Features like AirPlay won't work even on these supported devices.

Incompatible and prohibited devices

Some devices won’t work on the UVic network or are prohibited. Common ones include:

Network routers, switches and extenders: These interfere with the UVic network. This makes the service slower and less reliable for you and all your neighbours.

Wireless printers: Many wireless printers create a local W-Fi network to connect to. This degrades network performance for everyone. If you bring a printer, make sure it offers USB or Bluetooth connectivity.

Smart devices: Because of our network’s enhanced security, home automation devices that use Wi-Fi (including smart bulbs, plugs and speakers) won’t work. If you bring any smart devices, make sure you can control them with Bluetooth.

Connect

To connect your device to UVic-BYOD, you’ll need your device’s wireless MAC address. Your device’s manufacturer’s support site may have instructions. Once you have your MAC address, you’ll need to register your device using a web app.

To register your device:

  1. In a web browser, go to .
  2. Sign in with your NetLink ID and passphrase.
  3. Review and accept the terms and conditions to continue to Manage devices.
  4. Select Add.
  5. Enter a device name and the MAC address of your device, then select Submit.

Once the device appears in the list at the bottom of the “Manage devices page", it will be able to connect to the UVic-BYOD network. You’ll need the WPA2 key. You can find it near the top of the “Manage devices” page.

You can delete registered devices from the same web app. You may need to do this if you reach your three-device limit and want to swap one for something else.

Troubleshooting

If your device can’t connect, the most common cause is a typo in the MAC address in the registration web app. Please double-check that you’ve entered it correctly. If you’re sure it’s correct, contact us for help.
