Printing & scanning

There are many ways to print on campus. Many departments have their own multi-function devices (MFDs) for printing, copying and scanning. Computer labs on campus also have self-serve pay-for-print systems. Some offer large-format printing. Self-serve scanning is free in most cases. Other options:

  • Printing Services offers printing as a chargeback service
  • Blink, located in the UVic Bookstore, is a full-service large-format print shop
  • is a not-for-profit print shop in the SUB with self-serve and full-serve options

Lab printing (PaperCut)

Anyone with a ONECard can pay for printing at most computer labs and libraries on campus. It uses funds from your ONECard flex account. PaperCut is the name of the software used to manage pay-for-print services.

Labs computers are set up to use the nearest lab printers. You can also set up your laptop to connect to the printers.

Where a faculty is listed, that faculty owns that lab and printer. Students taking courses in that faculty have priority use.

Type Cost/impression
Black and white $.12
Colour $.40

When printing double sided, each side of the page is an "impression". 1 sheet of paper printed on both sides would cost $.24.

Because of the variety of large format printers and their operating costs, there's no standard price for large format printing across campus.

Scanning

Most computer labs also have flatbed scanners that students can use for free. Large-format scanners are available in the McPherson Library—Mearns Centre for Learing.

Office printing

Many departments have printers or multi-function devices (MFDs) in their offices to provide printing, copying, and scanning for their employees. They're administered by the department, which can determine who has access to them and whether their are charges or quotas for printing. University Systems provides technical support for them.

Contact your department office to find out if you have access to printing through them. If you do, you can also contact IT support for help connecting your device to the right network print queue.

Printing Services manages purchasing and leasing for printers and multi-function devices (MFDs). They can also coordinate the reassignment of underused MFDs at a lower cost than purchasing new one.

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. In the search field, type the address of the desired printer server (for example, \\print5.uvic.ca\) and press Enter.
    • If you don’t know the name of the print server, please contact IT support for help.
  3. If prompted, enter your personal NetLink ID followed by @uvic.ca and your passphrase in the appropriate fields. Click OK.
  4. A window showing a list of UVic printers will pop up. The printers that you see listed will depend on your NetLink privileges.
  5. Select your departmental printer by right-clicking on its icon and then selecting Connect.
  6. If you receive a No driver found message, your computer may need an additional printer driver. Try running Windows Update. If that doesn’t work, please contact your technical support contact or the Computer Help Desk.
  7. The printer window will pop up. The printer should now be connected. It will stay connected even if you close the window.

  1. Go to the Apple menu, then System Preferences.
